Police in Florida are frantically looking for an assault rifle that an officer lost after leaving it on top of his car.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department said the deputy misplaced his AR-15 rifle and ammunition as he prepared to go on shift on Tuesday night.
He only realised the service weapon was missing in the early hours of Wednesday morning, said a news release.
The unnamed officer placed the gun in its case with three loaded magazines on top of his patrol vehicle’s boot, but “became distracted” and drove away.
The sheriff’s department said “numerous resources”, including reserve deputies and bloodhounds, were deployed immediately to find the gun.
They have scoured the streets of Aliso Viejo and Laguna Hills, where the deputy said he was on patrol overnight.
The rifle is described as a black, semi-automatic, .223-calibre Colt AR-15 with a 20-in barrel and serial number A0091856.
