A pupil of Grace Children School, Gbagada, Lagos, Emeka Ilozor, has emerged the 2016 Ultimate Mathematics Ambassador, a competition for primary school pupils in Ogun and Lagos states.
Ilozor, 10, beat more than 1,000 pupils from 349 primary schools in the two states to emerge winner.
He was rewarded with N125,000 and plaque while his teacher was given a cash prize and a plaque.
The Ultimate Mathematics Ambassador is an annual event organised by the Ambassadors Schools, Ota, Ogun State.
This came as the Chief Executive Officer, National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Prof. Adewale Solarin, said mathematics competition should be introduced to beginners.
This, according to him, will help them to understand principles of the subject at a young age.
Solarin, who is also the president of the African Mathematics Union, said this during the Prize Giving Ceremony of TUMA on Saturday.
The competition brings the best out of children.
The Chairman, Ambassadors Schools, Mr. Samson Osewa, in his remarks, said the target of competition was to make “as many pupils as possible to love Mathematics.”
With a score of 93.5, Osewa said Ilozor had the highest score since the inception of the competition four years ago.
