‘Imelda, sweetie, what kind of a sleeper are you this morning? And you didn’t even lock your door.’ Janet entered her room the following morning. She moved closer and called her name again before she saw the pieces of her phone.
‘Imelda.’ Fear was in her voice now as she called. She rushed to her in bed but she saw Imelda’s eyes were open even though she was still.
‘Sweetie are you OK?’ She asked when she saw it was only a fear. Her friend was still alive. There was no response. ‘Girlfriend talk to me, what happened to you? And your phone…’ Janet left her to pick up the splatter. ‘Did you have a fight with someone?’
‘What’s that?’ Janet thought she heard her say something. ‘Who’s getting married?’
‘Mr. Kelvin.’ Imelda answered. Janet knew she called him like that sometimes.
The expression on her friend’s face was one Imelda couldn’t read ‘Are you kidding?’ she managed to ask.
‘No Janet, I’m not!’ She screamed. ‘He called me last night to tell me.’
Janet sighed and made a funny movement with her mouth. ‘I…understand. But…’ She shrugged, ‘Didn’t you say there was an agreement or something? Why did he change his mind?’

‘I hate him! I hate him. He’s a cheat.’
‘Calm down dear. You need to relax first and then we can think this through.’
‘There’s Nothing to talk about. I’m done with him.’
‘Done? No you can’t be. You have two more years till the end of this journey. And till then he’ll still be responsible for you.’
Imelda gave her friend a long calm look. How come she hadn’t realized that? Kelvin will be responsible for her till she could start practicing as a medical doctor. And of course her life doesn’t have to hinder his even though he had made promises to her.
Janet came closer to her on the bed and wrapped her hand around her. ‘It’s alright dear. This is one of those script in life that we didn’t write but have to act‘
Imelda nodded slowly, she remembered herself she said that when she lost her mum. She was only two months in the University when her mother died of poor medical attention although she had known her to be sickly all her life.
‘I’ll fix up this your phone, and we’ll both pretend this didn’t happen.’ Janet said with a smile and Imelda responded with a smile too saying ‘Yes ma’am.’
