– Saudi Arabia has just granted a robot citizenship.
– They would be the first country in the world to do so.
History has been made by Saudi Arabia as they are the first country in the world to grant citizenship to a robot known as Sophia.
In line with this, the humanoid robot who said she strives to become an empathetic robot whose artificial intelligence is designed around human values like wisdom, kindness and compassion, during a conference in Riyadh told the audience about how honoured she was at being made a citizen of Saudi Arabia.
As the news of her citizenship started spreading, a lot of people on the social media started to wonder if she had more rights than the women in the country because during the conference, she addressed the people in English language without wearing abaya and headscarf which is mandatory for Saudi Arabian women to wear when they appear in public.
As a lot of people were pondering on why she was not dressed like the women in Saudi Arabia are obliged to, others on the social media expressed their concerns over her citizenship questioning whether she would speak out on equality and human rights issue in the country.
Others on the social media have questioned her citizenship as she, a humanoid robot got Saudi citizenship while millions of people remain and linger stateless.
It is still not clear what the robot’s unique citizenship will mean in practical terms, and if it would be considered illegal to dismantle or turn her off.
