So Friday came and I began preparing for the presentation. I had had one similar to this but I was pretty much a young employee then and that was an internal affair. But this involved not just some external company but the federal government so I began feeling jittery even though I had rehearsed over and over again. Thirty minutes before the slated time, my secretary came in to inform me that the guests had arrived and the boardroom was set. I told her I had heard and she left. I went into my restroom and check my outfit and make up and I was good. I tried some prayers too before going back to the office. And just as I stepped out, I saw Damian standing before my desk. He was smiling down at me. I winked. I winked again. And he was not there. What was that? I frowned.

I took my mind away from whatever that was and focused on the presentation. It lasted for two hours with a meeting. The senior managers and other concerned people were there. At the end we had positive remarks from our guests and expected same results as well. After all that had been done, I went back to my office.
My desk phone rang, ‘‘Hi Lola, that was a great presentation you pulled there.’’
“Thank you sir.’’ I replied. It was Damian. I was going to ask him if he was in my office earlier that morning when he asked, ‘’Tomorrow is still a deal, right?’’
‘’Yes, but I’ll say ‘a date.’” I said.
‘’Yes dear, a date. Should I pick you. It’s Eko Hotel and Suites’’ I didn’t feel like him picking me as it would make my mum resume her disturbances so I said, ‘’I’ll find my way there. What time is it?’’
I got to the venue at half past four and Damian was waiting for me. We hugged slightly and he led me to one of the restaurants where we ate and talked. I loved every moment with him, he was not my boss this time, we talked like kids. Then at five thirty we went to a pool side for the proposal. There were ladies and young men like ourselves all dressed in evening wears and then we started introducing ourselves, cousins, friends, colleagues and of course girlfriends.
I won’t bore you with the whole drama the guy put forth to propose except that it was a surprise one and one any girl would love. The young man actually went into the pool to bring out the ring box and proposed right inside the water. Then we the guests who have been hiding came out with the paparazzi and screams. I hadn’t seen anything of such my entire life. There was one more thing I hadn’t seen my entire life too.
I was sipping my wine and looking around for my date. Yes date, not boss. I bumped into a couple, the lady or wife was obviously pregnant and the man, as they made way for me to pass turned and I saw Mayowa.
Yes Mayowa Cole. Do I need to say more to remind you about him? The same one who is Shola’s baby daddy.
We stared a each other like for forever that the woman he was holding had to tap him, ‘Baby,p are you OK?’ she said.
I wanted to say something but the words won’t form. Then Damian showed up. ‘’Babe, I’ve been looking for you…’’ he was saying then stopped as he saw Mayowa too.
‘’Oh boy, I didn’t know you were gonna come.’’ He shook his hand and they greeted, I noticed it was slightly though. They exchanged pleasantries a while and then we left.
‘‘You two know each other?’’ Damian asked me as we got into his car to leave.
“Yeah, we used to be..’’ I searched for the word to use, ‘‘neighbours.’’
‘‘Oh, you know some man then. His dad used to be our business partner and he’s a friend of Nelson too.’’ Damian said. Nelson is the guy who just proposed to his girlfriend. We got talking about little things that I felt I could ask what else he knew about Mayowa.
So I stylishly asked the uttermost question in my heart. ‘’Was that his wife? I mean the pregnant lady.’’
‘’Well,’’ He started and smiled, ‘’Mayowa is a ladies’’ man. I can’t remember being invited for his wedding, so I guess that must be his new baby mama.’’
“What?’’ I feigned surprise, ‘’How many are there already?’’
Damian shrugged, ‘‘I don’t know exactly. Nelson is closer to him than I am but I guess he’s got three kids already, different mums”
‘‘Oops!’’ I exclaimed, still acting like I didn’t know all that before. Then I acted more. “There must be something about him the girls are running after.’’ I said and giggled.
“Money of course. You know how much a baby mama gets paid when they have his child? If you’re lucky it’s a boy, men, the girl is rich all her life.’’
“Now that’s ridiculous.’’ I said alarmed.‘’Why would a girl drop her child for money?’’
Damian smiled and looked at me, “Things people do for money it is called. They strike a deal, with legal backings involved so the girl looses custody or claims over the child for life.’’
Now that was one part of the story I don’t think I knew. “Is that what your friend does too?’ I asked inquisitively but tried not to sound like I was probing him.
“Let’s not talk about this anymore dear.’’ He said and turned to look at me again. His face showed the conversation was getting to boundaries he wouldn’t want to step on. His grip seemed firmer on the steering wheel and all of a sudden the atmosphere grew cold. He was quiet.
‘’Ok.’’ I said and faced the road in front of me. My mind was racing with a million thoughts and it soon fell on Shola.
She hadn’t called me since she left and it was today she told me they would be going to take the child away. Then it struck me that I just saw Mayowa at the proposal party, perhaps they changed the plans.
Damian was still quiet beside me. I wondered what bothered him so much that he didn’t want to talk about. I began to suspect there was something he knew that he didn’t want to say. I thought of what to do.
‘’Are you OK?’’ I asked him. He turned to look at me again and smiled.
‘‘I’m fine dear. I was just thinking of us.’’ He said.
“mmmm…’’ I mumbled.
He went on, ‘’What do you say we do this again next week. It’s just going to be a party of us alone.’
“Fine.’ I replied without thinking.
